Early life and education – When she was born in Mayfair in 1926, Princess Elizabeth (later The Queen) and her family did not expect that she would one day become Monarch. But everything changed in December 1936 when her uncle – King Edward VIII – abdicated, making her father King, and her next in line to the throne.
The Queen’s Accession and Coronation – On 6 February 1952, King George VI died following a prolonged illness and Princess Elizabeth immediately acceded to the throne, becoming Queen Elizabeth II and taking on all of the responsibilities which came with her new title. Later in the year, the date was set for the Coronation at Westminster Abbey and preparations began for the spectacular ceremony.
The Queen and the Commonwealth – As Head of the Commonwealth The Queen played an important symbolic and unifying role, reinforcing the links by which the Commonwealth joins people together across the globe.
The Queen’s Jubilees and milestones – The Queen’s reign was punctuated by an unprecedented number of milestones. Her Majesty’s jubilees and birthdays provided cause for celebration and reflection throughout the remarkable years following her Accession. Such events helped reinforce the Sovereign’s role as a focus for national identity and unity as people across the Commonwealth came together to mark an important occasion for their Head of State.
Queen and the Church – The Queen’s role as “Defender of the Faith and Supreme Governor of the Church of England”, was both an important element of her role as Monarch and a deeply personal part of her life. Her Majesty spoke openly on many occasions of the strength she took from her Christian faith, and often turned to the teachings of the Bible at difficult moments in her own life and the life of the Nation. She respected all faiths, seeing them as a force for good in the world, and a way of bringing communities together.
